In the United States, there are two types of complete physicians — osteopathic physicians (D.O.) and allopathic physicians (M.D.). Both types are completely qualified physicians and similar in many ways. For example, applicants who attend medical college to become a D.O. or M.D. generally have four-year undergraduate degrees focusing on science. D.O.s and M.D.s must also complete four years of basic medical education and participate in internships or residency programs to attain graduate education. While in practice, both D.O.s and M.D.s are licensed to perform surgery and prescribe medication. At the same time, there are differences between the two types.
